While many Indian families think of themselves as traditional and devout, sometimes the purpose and the point of the traditions they follow and the festivals they celebrate seems sorely lost on them.
Hemlata’s story is about the Navratra festival, where on the last day of which girls are fed and worshipped in the houses. But what happens once the Navratra gets over? Do they get the same respect? Do they continue to feel wanted or comfortable at home, with their families; or in public with outsiders? They don’t. On the contrary, they still feel harassed, do not receive respect from their husbands – and are sometimes even sexually victimized.
Hemlata talks to some girls and boys in her locality about this dichotomy – and just might make you think about what the Navratras really should be about!
